DVLA Registrations & The Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (also known as D.V.L.A Vehicle Registration Offices):

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency is abbreviated as the D.V.L.A. The DVLA was formerly referred to as the DVLC. The DVLA is the Government Agency responsible for maintaining the database of drivers, number plates and car registrations of all the Drivers and vehicles registered in Mainland Britain.

Based in Swansea, the DVLA is also responsible for issuing vehicle registrations, both personalised plates and ordinary vehicle registration marks. Number plates and car registration marks are all transferred through the local Registrations Number plate transfer Offices, which are located around the country.

Northern Ireland has its own number plate Agency called the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Northern Ireland (DVLNI) which functions in a similar way, and hold the records for car registration numbers and number plates in Northern Ireland. Irish Registrations are legal and very popular car registration marks used in the Mainland UK as well.
